EC Revokes Pujut By-Election In Sarawak




PUTRAJAYA, June 19 (Bernama) -- Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the Pujut by-election in Sarawak has been revoked.

This followed the Kuching High Court decision on Saturday to retain Dr Ting Tiong Choon as Pujut State Assemblyman.

"A notice on the revocation of Pujut by-election will be exhibited by returning officer election at Dewan Suarah Miri and the Office of the Returning Officer today," he said in a statement, here today.

The statement was issued after a special meeting of the EC today on the status of Pujut by-election folllowing the Kuching High Court decision.

"The special meeting today revoked the election process and the dates set," he added.

The EC had set June 20 as the date for nomination and July 4 as polling day fo Pujut state by-election.

On May 12, Dr Ting was disqualified as Pujut State Assemblyman for allegedly possessing dual citizenship (Malaysia and Australia).

This followed a motion tabled by Sarswak Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh It was passed by a vote of 70-10.

The sacking of Dr Ting caused a vacancy for Pujut state seat.

On June 7, Dr Ting filed an originating summons to challenge the decision of the state assembly.
