Bagan Serai Umno Goes To Ground To Identify Candidate

TAIPING, June 28 (Bernama) -- Bagan Serai UMNO has gone to the ground to identify its 'likeable' or potential candidates for the Bagan Serai parliamentary constituency and three state constituencies in the 14th general election (GE14).

Its divisional chief Datuk Sham Mat Sahat said the move was to ensure the parliamentary seat and Alor Pongsu state seat remained with Barisan Nasional (BN) and to wrest back the Semanggol and Selinsing seat won by the opposition in the last general election.

"We will ask the grassroots which candidates they like and their potential to win," he told a media conference at a gathering for Aidilfitri and Sekolah Menengah Alang Iskandar ex-students reunion here today.

On Bagan Serai's preparations for GE14, he said the directives given by the top leadership had been followed including analysing the cause of the party's defeat in the Selinsing and Semanggol constituencies.

"UMNO still has the confidence and support of the youth because the division's Pemuda and BN component parties have played their part in wooing them back to UMNO," he said.
