BN Unaffected By Mahathir's Meeting With Hindraf Leader - Kayveas
CAMERON HIGHLANDS, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- A recent meeting between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) chairman P. Waythamoorthy will have no effect on the support for the Barisan Nasional (BN), said myPPP president Tan Sri M. Kayveas.
He said Dr Mahathir wanted Hindraf to join the opposition Pakatan Harapan pact purely for personal interest and not to champion the cause of the people.
Hindraf leaders often joined various political parties, including the BN, and eventually opposed the government purportedly when their demands were not not met, he said after opening a workshop for about 50 pupils on the Year Six Assessment Test.
"The people are confused over the Hindraf struggle because toppling leaders or the government is not a struggle but a malicious intention which has nothing to do with championing the people's cause.
"Hindraf has disintegrated. Some of its members have joined Makkal Sakti and PKR. One leader had become a deputy minister and then opposed the BN government," he said.
Kayveas, who is advisor to the Transport Ministry, was asked to comment on Dr Mahathir's meeting with Waythamoorthy last Friday at his office at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya, apparently to invite Hindraf to join the opposition pact.
PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali had claimed that Dr Mahathir's invitation to Hindraf to join the pact was not discussed by the Pakatan leadership.
Kayveas said only the BN government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had taken various measures for the welfare of the people, including the Indian community, in the country.
"The BN government has given primary focus to construction of schools and made various efforts to raise the economic status of the Indian community," he said.
