Kedah UMNO Studying List Of Potential Wanita Candidates For GE14
ALOR SETAR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Kedah UMNO is studying the list of its potential Wanita candidates received to be forwarded to and considered by the party's top leadership for fielding in the coming 14th general election.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said it was not wrong to field a woman candidate in any parliamentary or state seat if the candidate could bring victory for Barisan Nasional in the elections.
"We are analysing each name in the list as we want to ensure the candidates selected can really shoulder the responsibilities (as elected representatives) and are acceptable to the voters and people at large in the respective constituencies".
Ahmad Bashah said this to reporters at the 'Women of Excellence Award 2017' presentation in conjunction with the Women's Day celebration at Wisma Negeri, here, last night.
At the event, 31 women including two state executive councillors received the award presented to them by the Menteri Besar's wife, Datin Seri Hizam Awang Ahmad.
The two are state Women's Development, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Entrepreneur Development and Social Welfare Committee chairman, Datuk Suraya Yaacob, and Science, Innovation and Information Technology, Communications and High Technology, and Human Resources Committee chairman, Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor.
The other recipients included state Public Service Commission chairman Datuk Sepiah Isa, Yayasan Sultanah Bahiyah Affairs Committee chairman, Datin Ramizan Ibrahim, state legal adviser Datuk Nor Azura Mohamed Zohdi and Universiti Sains Malaysia's Medical Faculty deputy dean, Assoc Prof Dr Rafidah Hanim Mokhtar.
Also given the award were Malaysia's Olympic Games sailing competitor, Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif; netball gold medallist at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, Izyan Syazana Wazir , state Education director, Datuk Azuyah Hassan; and former director-general of the Women's Development Department, Datuk Munirah Abdullah Bajanuddin.
The Women of Excellence Award is given in appreciation and recognition of the role and contributions of women in various fields including politics, economy, sports, law, education and training, religion and media.
Ahmad Bashah said the state government would continue to provide the space and opportunities for women to uplift their socio-economic status and to realise their full potential.
