UMNO Sends Medical Team To Help Pulau Pinang Flood Victims




KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- The UMNO Malaysia Welfare Bureau (BiKUM) today sent a medical and assistance team to help flood victims in Pulau Pinang, said its chairman Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

He said the team would focus on treating patients who could be infected with water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, fever, food poisoning as well as patients which chronic ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

"Our team will go to the major areas such as Kepala Batas, Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam, Nibong Tebal, Tasik Gelugor, Jelutong and several other places to provide treatment and daily essential kits including blankets," he said.

Dr Shamsul was speaking at a press conference which was also attended by the head of the BiKUM medical team Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh before flagging off the medical team convoy which will be in Penang until Sunday.

Shamsul who is also Lenggong Member of Parliament said the bureau had held discussions with the state UMNO liaison committee to identify victims who needed immediate assistance so that the programme could be carried out smoothly.

He said this was the third time the bureau had gone to Pulau Pinang to provide assistance to the people through the UMNO Assistance Programme after Nov 5 and 7.

Shamsul said the programme will benefit an estimated 6,000 families, with 1,000 people from the party's machinery who will work with government agencies in the state to ensure aid gets to the victims.

Meanwhile, Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh said the bureau will also provide immediate treatment to any victim who cannot go to the clinics and hospitals because their homes were still flooded.
