Deplorable Schools In Sarawak Main Issue Debated
KUCHING, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The issue of dilapidated schools in Sarawak continues to be debated in the state legislative assembly sitting today when Simoi Peri (BN-Lingga) said, in addition to over 1,000 schools in deplorable state, the completion of two school projects were also delayed.
She said the issue was in urgent need of attention from the relevant authorities and quoted a media report that Sarawak required RM3 billion to repair 1,000 dilapidated schools throughout the state.
"Even though the federal government allocated RM1 billion for that purpose in the 2018 National Budget, the amount is far too low that it should have been," she said when debating on the 2018 State Budget at the Sarawak state legislative assembly here today.
Hence she proposed that the state government study and provide a concrete action plan on ways to solve the issue of dilapidated schools in Sarawak.
"We can no longer gamble and deny the rights of our children, especially those in rural areas from access to good and comfortable educational facilities," she said, adding that education was the best way out of poverty.
To address the problem of delayed completion of projects, she suggested that all federal allocation be channelled directly to the state government and agencies concerned for more effective and efficient project management.
