Sarawak BN Assemblymen Support Amendment To Land Code - BNBBC Chairman

KUCHING, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) government fully agrees that the Sarawak Land Code is to be amended and not as alleged by certain parties and individuals in the social media, said chairman of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers' Club (BNBBC) Paulus Palu Gumbang.

Paulus said that 50 BN assemblymen's objection to the private Bill moved by Baru Bian (PKR-Ba'kelalan) yesterday was because the Bill violated the standing Order.

He also said the amendment introduced by Baru was only to amend one section of the land code, which is Section 2 without taking into consideration other sections of the Sarawak Land Code which is also relevant.

Paulus said the chief minister had made a commitment on this issue, which could be seen with the establishment of a special Task Force headed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

"As we are aware, the state government has already set up a task force to look into a holistic and comprehensive amendment of the State Land Code."

"We therefore should give enough time for the Special Task Force to complete their findings and provide further recommendations, especially on the relevant sections to be amended," he said at a press conference on the sidelines of the sitting here today.

Baru yesterday moved a motion to amend the Sarawak Land Code to recognise Pulau Galau Pemakai Menua or communal forest reserve.

The motion was objected by 50 BN assemblymen while 10 from Pakatan Harapan supported the Bill.

Following the rejection of the motion, the BN assemblyman were accused of rejecting the amendment of the land code as was viral in the social media.
