Jakim To Provide Counselling Service To Flood Victims




TASEK GELUGOR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will provide counselling to Penang's flood victims who are undergoing emotional stress in the face of the current devastating flood.

Its deputy director-general (human development), Datuk Zainal Abidin Jaafar said the department had 30 personnel who were certified to provide spiritual advice to victims who could not come to terms with the emotional impact since the floods hit their homes last Saturday.

Since the first day of the floods, he said some 50 to 100 staff members had gone down to the field to help distribute various aid, together with Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) and Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM).

He was speaking to reporters after presenting flood relief donations to 206 KAFA ( Kelas al-Quran dan Fardhu Ain) teachers here today.

Also present was Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) chairman Datuk Shahbudin Yahya.

In addition, Jakim also provided financial assistance including basic necessities to representatives of several mosques and KAFA schools, who were affected by the floods in Penang, Sungai Petani and Kulim.

Meanwhile, Shahbudin, who is also Tasek Gelugor MP said the counselling programme was aimed at helping distressed victims build resilience and promote recovery after the floods.
