SANDAKAN, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Rice, cooking oil, tea and sugar are basic essential items which all homes should have, but to the less affordable families like that of Sumarni Alimuddin, they may be a luxury.

Sumarni, 28, from Kampung Forest, was among the recipients of the food items, given by Sandakan Puteri UMNO through its 'Ziarah Kasih Puteri Peduli 2.0' programme.

"I have no job and my father has passed away. We rely on our mother who sells traditional kuih for income.

"The contributions provided through the programme has helped to lessen our burden and I hope that the programme will continue to be carried out," she told Bernama.

The food items were presented to the family by Sandakan Puteri UMNO leader Siti Haiba Abd Majid, herself.

Another recipient, Arni Binti Running, 22, of Kampung Sim-Sim, said the food contribution would reduce the family's expenses on the food items and used the money for other requirements.

She said her husband, who works at a furniture shop, was the sole breadwinner.

Meanwhile, Siti Haiba said the the Sandakan Puteri UMNO started the programme in February this year with the second, this month , for the less-affordable families in several villages in Sandakan, including Kampung Sim Sim, Kampung Forest and Tinusa.

"The recipients were chosen from E-Kasih, a database listing the poor families in the country," she said.
