Hulu Terengganu UMNO's Flood Volunteers Take Proactive Approach

KUALA BERANG, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- The Hulu Terengganu UMNO division is taking a proactive approach by preparing its volunteer members one month earlier in anticipation of the floods.

Its deputy chief, Datuk Rozi Mamat said the approach was taken because several areas in the district are usually hit by floods since they are situated near major rivers.

Rozi, who is also Telemong state assemblyman, said the Hulu Terenggganu UMNO division flood volunteer squad was set up last year to aid in delivering food supplies and evacuation of victims.

"This voluntary squad consisting of hundreds of members have been trained to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the National Security Council.

"In November, we started delivering food and other items such as blankets, beds, mattresses and stoves at several relief centres," he told reporters after distributing supplies to flood victims at Kampung Bukit Tadok yesterday.

Just like any volunteer, the state assemblyman had to wade in thigh high water to deliver essential items for flood victims in the area.

Rozi said Hulu Terengganu UMNO division was educating the residents in the district on safety measures that should be taken during floods.

"This is to ensure that the residents know what to do when floods occur. For example, the need for evacuation to relief centres when the water rises to a certain level," he added.

Yesterday, Hulu Terengganu district was reported to have the highest number of flood victims in the state with 515 victims from 198 families at 20 relief centres.
