UMNO Members Need To Have Winning Mentality To Assist Najib
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- UMNO members should demonstrate the spirit of solidarity by having a winning mentality to support and assist party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak retain the mandate of leading the government, said a Perak delegate.
Teluk Intan UMNO division head, Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin said the war drums would be sounded anytime now, hence the winning mentally must be entrenched in each party member towards garnering a big mandate as it would be a matter of 'life and death' for the Malays.
"Don't let the president (Najib) be alone in this. Don't just watch on the sidelines the difficulties shouldered by our leader," he said when debating on the party president's policy speech delivered at the UMNO General Assembly, here, today.
He said Perak opined there were seven winning mentalities as prerequisites to winning in the 14th general election, namely loyalty and sacrifice for the party's struggle; not be complacent and to always think ahead; to have the spirit of togetherness; not sweeping matters under the carpet; identify the enemies; and set the target of winning and delve into the concerns and grouses of the people.
"We must continue with UMNO's visibility in society. UMNO which has been around for seven decades must always be seen with the people. The changing political landscape, challenges and the prevailing environment require us to understand the people's needs and listen to their pulse so that UMNO is seen as inclusive," he said.
Mohd Azhar also expressed support for the proposal of the three party wings for the posts of party president and deputy president not be contested in the coming party elections to maintain unity.
"The UMNO president needs a war general to be with him always in facing GE14. As deputy prime minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the most qualified," he said.
Earlier, Pahang UMNO delegate Datuk Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz said the principle of wala' or loyalty stressed upon by the party president had enabled UMNO to overcome various obstacles and challenges although always faced with attempts to divide the party such as by creating factions.
Mohamad Sahfri, who is also Barisan Nasional Youth secretary, proposed that UMNO members including from the Youth wing stage a protest in front of the United States embassy here tomorrow to state their solidarity with Palestine over the question of Jerusalem.
The proposed protest rally is over United States President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
