Najib's Speech Gives Clear Message On Unity For GE14 - Ahmad Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- The policy speech by UMNO president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has focused on getting party leaders and members to strengthen unity because it is an important prerequisite to achieve victory in the 14th General Election (GE14), according to its vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said the speech by the Prime Minister had also stressed on having all UMNO members to put aside internal crisis to enable UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to secure a two-third majority and to retain the administrative capital of Putrajaya.

"If the element (unity) is empowered and supported by the component parties, BN will be able to win the hearts and minds of the fence-sitters," he told a media conference after the opening ceremony of the UMNO General Assembly 2017 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here today.

Also present was another UMNO vice-president, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

Ahmad Zahid, who is discharging the duties of UMNO deputy president, said Najib had also placed the importance of solidarity in the party's election machinery to avoid from being at the crossroads.

"He (Najib) reminded that there would be a high price to pay if BN lost (in the GE14). In order to prevent that, we need to take such actions as mentioned by him," he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said what was tabled by Najib was not just to uplift the spirit of UMNO delegates and members but also served as a 'report card' as the people had the choice whether to vote for BN or the opposition.

"The report card is not something that has been made up but it is already proven. It is not an easy task but it's not impossible to convince the voters," he said.

Hishammuddin said the wisdom, maturity and high spirit displayed by the delegates at the general assemblies of the party's three wings were apparent in today's assembly.
