IDM Personnel Can Vote By Post - EC

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- The personnel of the Immigration Department of Malaysia (IDM) on duty during the general election are among the five additional categories allowed to vote by post in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Apart from IDM's personnel, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the postal voting was only open to members of the Civil Defence Force, the National Disaster Management Agency and the National Registration Department who served at Urban Transformation Centres.

He said the matter was decided by the EC at a meeting on Nov 28.

"This facility is provided to personnel who work on polling day only on the justification that they are voters who cannot leave their duty on polling day to ensure the safety and service aspects of the people are guaranteed.

"This facility will be implemented in GE14. The gazette was made on Dec 13 based on the Election (Postal Voting) Regulations 2013," he said in a statement here today.

Last November, Mohd Hashim announced that personnel of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, health workers (government hospitals and clinics only) as well as personnel of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Prisons Department of Malaysia and Police Volunteer Reserve on duty during the general election were among the five categories who would be allowed to vote by post in the next GE.

Previously, voter groups in the country who could apply for postal voting were military personnel and spouses and police personnel and spouses who could not attend during the early polling day, media workers and election workers who had to vote outside the polling centre.
