TAPAH, March 4 (Bernama) -- UMNO Youth hopes that more young people will be nominated as candidates to contest in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Its chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he has his own way of highlighting this aspiration to UMNO president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and would not divulge it through the media.

"We hope the number of young candidates (to be fielded in GE14) will not be less than the last general election, if possible can be more," he said.

Khairy, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, told this to reporters after opening the Tapah Sport Complex in Tapah Road here today, which was also attended by his deputy, Datuk M. Saravanan.

He also hoped that there would be new faces from the youth who are contesting in the GE14.

Last year, Khairy said UMNO Youth requested that over 40 parliamentary and state seats be allocated to young candidates in GE14.

Touching on the sports complex, he said the five-hectare complex was completed fully in December.

The first phase construction comprises sports facilities, including a multi-purpose hall, three badminton courts, three sepak takraw courts, a netball court, football field and the complex management office.

He said the second phase would commence soon with the project scope to cover a pavilion on a football field that could accommodate 500 seats, 400-metre running track, two long jump lanes, two javelin lanes and slopes for long jump and discus events.

The complex would also become the new venue for fencing events at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) this year.
