KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- Political activist Maria Chin Abdullah, who confirmed her resignation as Bersih 2.0 chairman, will only contest for a parliamentary seat in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14).
"Nothing less than an MP (member of parliament). If you are at a state level, how can you push for reforms in the electoral system and agendas?," she asked.
She was speaking to reporters when asked whether she would still contest if offered a state seat instead of parliamentary seat.
Also present was former Bersih 2.0 chairman Ambiga Sreenevasan.
Chin hoped that becoming an MP would enable her to push the reform agenda and change the narrative in Parliament with high quality debates.
The former Bersih 2.0 chairman said she offered herself as an independent candidate to Pakatan Harapan to contest in GE14, adding that the coalition had welcomed her participation and would support her in whatever way possible.
