Don't be swayed by opposition's 'poisonous weet' promises - Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak once again reminded the people not to be swayed by the empty promises of the opposition which is likened to 'poisonous honey' which are nice to hear but can bring harm to the community and county.
The Prime Minister said many quarters were aware that what they had promised would not be implemented.
"If all the promises are to be made, it is no wonder the opposition's purpose is not to keep its promises...They have a purpose, which is a strong desire to be the parties who can form the government and have power," he said.
Speaking at the handing over of keys to homeowners of the Metropolitan Kepong 1Malaysia Civil Servant Housing Scheme (PPA1M) here today, Najib said as that was the intention, any method would be used to achieve it.
"That is why it is important to be careful and not to accept anything that the opposition promised. Use the mind and think whether it can be implemented or not," he said.
Najib further said the opposition's pledge in its manifesto to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and reintroduce the Sales and Services Tax (SST) would only cause the country to have a deficit of at least RM20 billion annually.
The government has collected GST taxes amounting to RM44 billion in 2017. The GST was implemented on April 1, 2015 replacing SST.
He said such deficits could lead to to a reduction in programmes for the people.
Najib, however, stressed that the government leadership always prioritised the interests of the people.
However, he said, it did not mean that the government could implement populist policies and be irresponsible and ultimately affected the economy and the future of the country.
