PUTRAJAYA, March 29 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has given his royal assent to enforce the Federal Constitution Order (Electoral Boundaries) (States of Malaya) effective today (March 29 2018).
In the Federal government gazette today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong made the order that the proposals in the Report of the Review of Electoral Boundaries dated March 6 should be enforced from the date of the order.
The Federal government gazette has been published in the Attorney General's Chamber portal, www.federalgazette.agc.gov.my.
The Election Commission (EC) has complied with Clause 2 Article 113 of the Federal Constitution on reviewing the boundaries of the States in Malaya (including the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) for Parliamentary and State election constituencies.
The EC had also submitted a report containing proposals on the boundaries of Parliamentary and State constituencies in the States of Malaya (including the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) to the Prime Minister on March 9.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tabled the motion on the Report of the Review of Electoral Boundaries at Dewan Rakyat.
The review proposed that there would be no additional seats for Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies and retain the existing 222 Parliamentary and 587 state seats.
The EC also proposed changes to the names of 12 Parliamentary constituencies and 28 state seats in Peninsular Malaysia.
The last review of electoral boundaries was held in 2003 and according to the Federal Constitution, it should be held at least every eight years.
The motion was passed with 129 MPs supporting and 80 voting against. The decision was announced by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia after the voting.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wound up the debate on the motion which saw 14 members of Parliament from both Barisan Nasional and the opposition taking part.
