Najib announces higher BR1M payment, new category of recipients
KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 (Bernama) --Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tonight announced higher 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) if the BN government remained in power after the 14th General Election.
He made the pledge when launching the BN's manifesto for the election, themed 'With BN for A Greater Malaysia,' at the Axiata Arena, KL Sports City.
He said the higher payment was possible because of the improving economy, the country's stronger financial situation, revenue from the Goods and Services Tax and prudent financial management.
"For households with monthly income RM3,000 and below, the BR1M payments for June and August 2018 totalling RM400 will be increased to RM800, meaning the overall payment is raised from RM1,200 to RM2,000!
"For households with monthly income from RM3,000 to RM4,000, BR1M payments for June and August totalling RM300 are doubled to RM600, thus bringing the overall BR1M payment from RM900 to RM1,500!" said Najib to thunderous applause from the crowd present.
For singles earning RM2,000 and lower monthly who received BR1M payment of RM450 in February, Najib promised an increase of RM150 in June, making the total RM600.
The 40, 000-odd BN supporters present were then on their feet when Najib announced a new BR1M category, that is households with monthly income between RM4,000 - RM5,000 whereby the BR1M payment totals RM700, payable in two tranches, RM350 in June and RM350 in August.
Apart from these, the BN manifesto this time also pledged a 'one-off' payment of RM1,500 to children of BR1M recipients who gain entry into higher educational institutions.
