Call for MoE to give replacement leave to schools on May 10

KUANTAN, April 12 (Bernama) -- The Congress of Unions of Teachers in the Malaysian Education Service has asked the Ministry of Education (MOE) to consider giving the schools involved in the 14th General Election (GE14) a replacement leave on May 10.

Its president, Datuk Mohd Sabri Mohd Arshad, said this was because teachers appointed as election workers had to start work early on the May 9 polling day to check and clean the classrooms and the halls used as voting stations.

Furthermore, he said teachers who would be stationed at ballot counting centres might have to stay back until long past midnight on that day.

"Approximately 6,000 schools nationwide will be used as polling centres. They needs a replacement leave as the election process will not only affect the schools on the May 9 polling day, but also the day after that, that is May 10."

"A lot has to be done by the school (teachers) to make sure that the classrooms and halls used for the GE14 are clean and usable for the students the following day," he told reporters here today.

Mohd Sabri said the replacement leave was also aimed at providing the teachers with sufficient rest time before returning to work.
