Dr Subramaniam to defend Segamat parliamentary seat
SEGAMAT, April 12 (Bernama) -- MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam has reiterated his stand to defend the Segamat parliamentary seat for a fourth term despite admitting to the tough challenges in the 14th General Election (GE14).
In spite of having the option to chose a safer seat to contest in, he chose to remain in the seat in order to continue the development of the area.
"I will not leave the area (Segamat) simply for an easy victory elsewhere because I have a great responsibility to the people here," he told reporters after attending a gathering with the Tai Chi associations of the Segamat parliamentary constituency, here today.
The Health Minister said he wanted to continue serving the people of Segamat and had a development agenda including a five-year action plan for the district to be launched next week.
"I hope the people of Segamat will continue to support the Barisan Nasional (BN) government and translate it through votes in GE14," he said.
He is confident of retaining his seat with the support of the local community including Chinese voters.
In the GE13, Dr Subramanian beat PKR and former health minister Datuk Dr Chua Jui Meng with a majority of 1,217 votes.
GE14 will be held on May 9.
The Segamat parliamentary constituency has 53,747 voters with 24,329 Malay voters, 23,662 Chinese and 5,459 Indians.
