EC advice to voters

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission today gave some advice to voters, especially those voting for the first time, in the run-up to the 14th general election on May 9.

Its legal advisor, Azizan Md Arshad, said they should first check and find out the polling station where they are supposed to vote.

When going to the polls, they must not forget to bring along their identity card, he said, adding that they must exercise care in marking the ballot paper so that it does not become a spoilt vote.

"Ensure that your fingers are free of any substance which can make the indelible ink ineffective. First-time voters must abide by the rule to have a fingertip dabbed with ink or they will not be given the ballot paper," he said in a programme on TV Alhijrah.

He also said that the entire election process to be adhered to was based on existing legislation and rules and were not set by the commission.

"The EC has not introduced any rule based on its own understanding. Everything is based on the Federal Constitution, election laws, rules and so on. Everything has been explained and the (election) process has to be adhered to by every voter," he said.

He also said that the EC decided on the date of polling after taking into consideration various factors.

Nomination for the 14th general election is set for April 28 and polling on May 9. Early voting is on May 5.
