Wee Ka Siong ready to defend Ayer Hitam seat

BATU PAHAT, April 13 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong is ready to defend the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat if he is nominated as candidate by the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th General Election.
While he is expected to face Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong, Wee said he was not afraid but did not look down on anyone who would be his opponent.
He said he would prefer to respect anyone who wanted to contest the seat instead of saying unsavoury things about the opponent.
"I think anyone who wishes to contest here is mentally prepared and it is not impossible for the person to think of victory...surely, if it is not about winning, why would anyone want to contest here," asked Wee.
He was speaking to reporters after the announcement of a special scholarship to study at 10 universities in China, at the Yong Peng High School here today.
Wee, who is also MCA deputy president, said this when commenting on his preparedness to defend the parliamentary seat as well as the acceptance of the Ayer Hitam constituents towards a DAP candidate.
In the last general election, Wee, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, defeated PAS candidate Hu Pang Chaw with a majority of 7,310 votes.
Earlier, he said the scholarship would benefit 322 local students who wanted to pursue bachelor's degree level and above in China, with a total allocation of RM20.7 million.
He added that the scholarship was fully sponsored by 10 universities from China that included daily expenses, meals and accommodation for the duration of the studies.
