Nawawi not surprised Dr M Contesting in Langkawi

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 (Bernama) -- Incumbent MP for Langkawi Datuk Nawawi Ahmad is not surprised that Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to contest the seat in the 14th general election (GE14).

He said Kedah Barisan Nasional (BN) had expected Dr Mahathir, who is also chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM)m to contest on the island.

He said he respected Dr Mahathir, 93, as a former prime minister and experienced politician, and his right to contest in Langkawi.

However, he said it must be borne in mind that the sentiments of the voters will not become votes, and they will choose wisely.

"When we vote, we have to think, and realise that the vote will determine the government which will set the direction the country, people and religion will take in the future," he said when contacted today.

In the 13th general election, Nawawi, 56, defeated PKR candidate Ahmad Abdullah with a majority of 11,861 votes.

Nawawi, who is chairman of the social media committee of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers´ Club (BNBBC) was commenting on the announcement by PH Deputy Chairman who is also president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail of Dr Mahathir´s decision to contest the Langkawi parliament seat on the PKR seat in GE14.

The announcement, made in Langkawi yesterday, sees Dr Mahathir, returning to the political arena after staying away in the last three general elections.
