7 InfraRakyat projects to transform Mersing into regional tourism hub

MERSING, April 18 (Bernama) -- Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin today expressed hope that the launch of seven InfraRakyat projects by the state government and the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) will be able to transform the district into a regional tourism hub.

He said all the projects reflected the high-level commitment of both parties to ensure Mersing to experience rapid economic growth, similar to Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and other cities.

"We want Mersing to compete with Langkawi, or to perform even better," he said at the launch of the Mersing district development initiative at Pantai Penyabong Jetty here today.

Mohamed Khaled said the seven projects include the development of the 'Dairy Valley' in Jemaluang to be built this year at a cost of RM70 million and was expected to produce four million litres of fresh milk by 2021; and the Endau-Mersing integrated fish processing plant, costing RM26.5 million, to facilitate local fishermen in the downstream fisheries industry.

The other five projects were the construction of chalets and the upgrading of accommodation for Air Papan Kampungstay (costing RM15 million); upgrading of the Jemaluang River jetty (RM1 million); to develop Tanjung Penyabong tourism centre; to upgrade the Simpang Tenggaroh Rest and Service (R&R) area and to install street lights at the intersection of Tenggaroh to Tanjung Leman.

Mohamed Khaled also proposed to build the Mersing bridge and elevated junction costing RM170 million to boost the tourism and economic sectors of the area.

"The proposal has already been discussed with ECERDC and they gave assurance that it will be prioritised in the project list," he said.
