KEMAMAN, April 20 (Bernama) -- Neram 1 Felda second generation settlers can consider themselves privileged to be given a substantial housing subsidy of RM30,000 by the Barisan Nasional government to enable them to possess their own home.

In this regard, Neram 1 Felda head Ismail Mohamad said 105 units of houses have been built through the Felda New Generation Housing Project.

According to him, 60 units are medium cost valued at RM120,000 each, which the target group can purchase at only RM90,000.

"The remaining 45 units are low-cost valued at RM90,000 and they only have to pay RM60,000," he told Bernama.

Looking back at their struggles when Neram 1 Felda was first opened in 1972, the settlers, said Ismail, never imagined that they would enjoy ease of life such as the present.

"We came to this palm oil plantation opened up by the government with just the basic necessities, carrying our little children..and just one thing on our mind, survival.

"Our hard work and the various programmes planned by the government for Felda settlers' development have enabled us to live comfortably like other people," he said.

Ismail, who is also a member of the Malaysian Settlers Consultative Committee, said applications for the units at the housing project, strategically located near Kuantan Port and the access to East Coast Expressway 2, was overwhelming, exceeding 1,000.

"Hence why, last February, Felda Properties applied for an additional suitable site near Jerangau-Jabor for more housing projects for the second generation settlers.

"The plan is to build 1,000 more units, and shophouses to spur economic growth in the area. InsyaAllah, Felda's top management will duly make the announcement on the matter," he said.
