GE14: DAP names two councillors as candidates

GEORGE TOWN, April 20 (Bernama) -- The Penang DAP today named two Penang Island City councillors as candidates for two state seats under the parliamentary constituency of Bukit Gelugor for the 14th General Election (GE14).

DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow named the two councillors as Joseph Ng Soon Siang and Syerleena Abdul Rashid for the Air Itam and Seri Delima state seats, respectively.

"They will replace incumbent Wong Hong Wai in Air Itam who has been named to contest the Bukit Bendera parliamentary seat and two-term Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer who is moving to another seat," he told the crowd during a 'ceramah' in Air Itam here today.

Chow also announced that Ramkarpal Singh, a son of the late Karpal Singh, as Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat candidate while incumbent Yeoh Soon Hin will defend the Paya Terubong state seat.

He said the remaining seven parliamentary seat candidates and 19 state seat candidates would be announced tomorrow.

Ramkarpal won the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat in a by-election on May 25, 2014, with a 37,659-vote majority over PCM candidate Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and two independent candidates, Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohamed Nabi Abdul Sathar and Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan after the Barisan Nasional (BN) opted not to contest.

The seat fell vacant after Karpal, the then DAP national chairman, died in a car accident near Kampar, Perak on April 17, 2014.

In the last general election, Rayer won the Seri Delima state seat with a majority 9,277 votes against BN's Low Joo Hiap.

For the Air Itam state seat, Wong, who is the Penang chief minister's political secretary, won with a majority of 7,316 votes against BN's Loo Jieh Sheng.

As for the Paya Terubong state seat, incumbent Yeoh defeated BN's Koh Wan Leong with a majority 25,719 votes in the last general election.
