FT BN renominates Zulhasnan, Yew as GE14 candidates

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- Federal Territories (FT) Barisan Nasional (BN) has renominated two old faces to contest their former parliamentary seats in the 14th General Election (GE14).

They are Malaysia's Ambassador to the United States Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique who will be contesting in Setiawangsa and Federal Territory MCA chairman Datuk Seri Yew Teong Look in Wangsa Maju.

Zulhasnan, when met by reporters after the announcement of the FT BN candidates today, said he would make full use of his strength as a Setiawangsa resident for over 20 years to win the hearts of the voters in the GE14.

"For the past five years, although I am not the elected representative, I always go down to the ground either on UMNO, BN, or the Yayasan Amal Wangsa platform.

"Although the opposition's candidates are much younger, I'm confident that many Setiawangsa residents know me, my home is also in Setiawangsa," he said, adding that he believed that local candidates stand a better chance of winning.

Zulhasnan, who has been serving as Malaysia's ambassador to the US since 2016, said he would resign from the post by Tuesday after receiving his credential letter as BN candidate for Setiawangsa.

He was Setiawangsa MP for two terms after winning the seat in the 11th and 12th general elections.

Meanwhile, Yew who won the Wangsa Maju seat in 2004 said he was confident that his efforts in helping the people in the constituency all this while would help him wrest back the seat from PKR in the GE14.

He lost the seat to PKR candidate in the 12th general election.

"Most of the Wangsa Maju people know me, I have continued serving the constituency and helped the Chinese community to build SJKC (national-type Chinese primary school) Wangsa Maju.

"Besides, I often go down to the ground help the Chinese and Indians especially in tackling hawkers and housing issues," he said.

Meanwhile, FT BN also named former Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin as its candidate in Lembah Pantai.

Raja Nong Chik made his first appearance as Lembah Pantai candidate in GE13 but lost to Nurul Izzah Anwar of PKR with a majority of 1,847 votes.

Despite believing that he had a better chance, the Lembah Pantai UMNO division head said he would let the voters decide on his fate in the GE14.

"My commitment to Lembah Pantai remains the same.

"My soul is with Lembah Pantai as I grew up and get married here. Lembah Pantai is not a stepping stone for me to go somewhere else or to become something else. Lembah Pantai is a self actualisation to me," he said.
