Ex-administrator, teacher, headmen among Perak BN candidates

IPOH, April 24 (Bernama) -- The Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) today has new faces from various backgrounds including administrators, professionals, teachers, headmen and grassroots leaders to secure victory at the 14th General Elections (GE14).

Former Perak State Secretary Datuk Seri Abdul Puhat Mat Nayan was among the 39 new faces nominated by the Perak BN to contest for parliamentary and state seats in GE14.

Abdul Puhat, 60, would be contesting in the Parit Buntar parliamentary seat.

The former District Officer and Kerian District Council president from 2004 to 2007 wanted to use his extensive experience to help the people and to recapture the seat, which was being held by Amanah vice president Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

Abdul Puhat was expected to contest in a three-cornered fight with Mujahid, who would be standing on the Pakatan Harapan ticket while the PAS candidate is Ahmad Azhar Sharin.

As a local boy in Tanjung Piandang, Abdul Puhat, when met, said he was confident his experience in the local authority which helped him to understand the needs and wants of the people would enable him to provide the best service to the people.

"I went to primary and secondary schools there (Tanjung Piandang) and I understand their many issues and problems, so I am confident at the opportunity available," he said when met by reporters after the announcement of the list of Perak BN candidates at the official residence of the menteri besar here today.

Earlier, state BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir announced that Perak BN had 32 new faces for 59 state seats and seven new candidates in 24 parliamentary seats.

In addition, two headmen were among the new candidates contesting in state seats, namely, Mohamad Zuraimi Razali for Manong and Shahrul Nizam Razali for the Kuala Kurau seat.

Meanwhile, Parit Buntar UMNO Division Wanita chief, Norsalewati Mat Norwani, who is also a new face in the Titi Serong state seat, said she wanted to bring changes in education and agriculture.

A teacher, Norsalewati said she would shoulder the confidence and belief entrusted on her with open arms as the area was won by PAS in GE12 and GE13.

Meanwhile, UMNO Youth chief Khairul Shahril Mohamed, who was nominated for the Bota seat, wanted to continue the legacy of the incumbent Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim who was dropped.

"I will use this opportunity available to give the best to the Bota community. There are still plenty of room for improvement here (Bota) including development covering the tourism and social sectors and I will champion the aspect of affordable housing," he said.

Meanwhile, MIC Wanita deputy chief T. Thangarani, who is the sole MIC candidate from the Perak BN, would contest in the Buntong state seat.

"The activities to be carried out include the development of the education sector, land issues and the economic sector," said Thangarani, who is also the Perak MIC Wanita Chief.
