MIC to identify 80,000 Indians in need of financial aid
KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- The MIC is in the process of identifying another 80,000 Indian families in the bottom 40 (B40) group to receive financial assistance for basic necessities, says MIC central working committee member Datuk P. Kamalanathan.
The 'Indian Welfare Programme' under the Socioeconomic Development of Indian Community (Sedic) has identified 20,000 Indians nationwide with a monthly household income of less than RM1,500 to receive RM80 monthly for three months for their grocery needs.
"Our intention is to hand out aid to 100,000 Indian families nationwide who are in dire need of assistance," Kamalanathan told reporters after launching the 'Indian Welfare Programme' at the Giant Kota Damansara here today.
The programme, an initiative of the Malaysian Indian Blueprint (MIB) under Sedic, is a joint effort with MyKasih Foundation aimed at providing assistance to the B40 group.
For recipient, A. Annjela, 60, the aid would help her with the monthly grocery bill.
"I spend about RM250 a month on groceries...although it´s (RM80) not much, it helps me with my monthly bill for the next three months," said the former cleaner who is unable to work due to various health problems.
M. Thulasimalar, 36, who was grateful with the assistance, said: "Groceries are very expensive. With the RM80, at least I can spend a little bit more on my groceries."
