SEGAMAT, April 25 (Bernama) -- Some of the Chinese voters in the Jementah state constituency feel cheated by the opposition which they claimed has failed to implement the pledges it made in its election manifesto for the 13th General Election (GE13) five years ago.

A voter, Tan Se Huat, 65, said the former elected representative from the opposition could be described as a 'seasonal leader' who only went to the ground during general election.

"Why make promises you can't keep...we've been waiting for almost five years but it's hard to even catch a glimpse of the elected representative from the opposition," said the farmer to Bernama when met at a coffee shop here.

Se Huat said this coming GE14, the Chinese voters would not make the same mistake they did before, and would choose a representative who was willing to work hard for the people.

"No matter who the MCA announced as its candidate, I will vote for 'dacing' (weighing scale) symbol because only this party will champion the fate of the voters," he said when asked to comment on the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Jementah state seat in the GE14, Chiam Yeo Meng.

A retiree, Tan Chin Hwa, 60, said he was disappointed with the opposition which could only talk and make empty promises that would never be fulfilled.

"There's nothing they do for Jementah, you can see for yourself that the Jementah town is just like five years ago, they just fix roads and drains only.

"(But) other development here such as the construction of the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Jementah hall was done by the BN government through Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam and Jementah MCA," he said.

Meanwhile, Lam Kao Teu said only BN and MCA leaders had helped Jementah people in providing various community-based services such as capital loans to young entrepreneurs, repairing damaged homes and helping the less fortunate.

"Dr Subramaniam (former Segamat member of parliament) visits Jementah almost every week. If he can't visit, he will send his officers as his representatives," said the 56-year-old insurance agent.

"It's different from the opposition former representative who don't seem to exist in Jementah and don't really care about either Chinese, Malay or Indian voters here.

Kao Teu said if BN won in Jementah in the GE14 , he hoped the party would build factories in the area to create more job opportunities for young people.

He also praised the Segamat Economic Development Action Plan (SEDAP) 2018-2023 announced recently by Dr Subramaniam which is deemed to bring a lot of 'luck' to the Segamat community, especially in Jementah.

In GE13, Tan Chen Choon of DAP won the Jementah seat by beating BN candidate Dr Lee Hong Tee with a majority of 2,196 votes.
