Two more candidates eyeing Sibu, Lanang seats

SIBU, April 26 (Bernama) -- As Nomination Day for the 14th General Election (GE14) nears, the scenarios in the Sibu and Lanang constituencies are getting more interesting as two more people announced their candidacy here today.

The women contenders under the Sarawak Peace Party (SPP) for the respective seats are businesswoman Tiew Yew Houng, 47, and legal practitioner Priscilla Lau, 49.

This means that Sibu will see a four-corner fight and Lanang, a three-corner contest.

Barisan Nasional (BN) has named Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew as candidate for Sibu and Kelvin Kong for Lanang whilst the incumbents, Oscar Ling and Alice Lau will defend the seats for DAP.

Sarawak State Reform Party (STAR) is fielding Simon Tiong Ing Tung in Sibu.

Tiew was a UPP member before she resigned from the party more than a month ago.

Lau had her first experience contesting in the last 11th Sarawak State Election on May 7, 2016.

She contested under Sarawak State Reform Party (STAR) in the Pelawan state seat against BN direct candidate Datuk Janet Lau Ung Hie and DAP's Wong Kee Wong.

Wong won with a majority of 4,314 after he garnered 13,056, while Lau obtained 8,742 votes.

Despite losing her deposit, Lau, who only received 597 votes, told reporters here today ?that was already good for four days' work and there are people believing in my fight.

"That has encouraged me to contest in the coming GE14."
