I will be travelling nationwide to assist BN machinery - Shahrizat
MUAR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) Wanita chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said her priority is to travel across the country in helping the BN machinery to win the 14th general election (GE14).
Shahrizat, who is also Wanita UMNO chief, said she decided not to contest in the GE14 two months ago and had discussed it with BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"When Datuk Seri Najib asked why I did not want to contest, I said for GE14, it is crucial for the machinery to bring victory to the BN.
"As such, my priority now is to travel throughout the country to be with the BN machinery, meet the women candidates to ensure that we (BN) win this election. So I decided not to contest this time," she told reporters after a Yasin recital and prayer session at the home of BN's Bukit Pasir candidate Datuk Noriah Mahat near here, today.
She said although the number of BN women candidates for the GE14 did not meet her target, she was satisfied that 85 BN women candidates would be contesting (11.7 per cent of the total seats).
"The 30 per cent was just a target and it was not easy to select candidates for this general election but they are our best choice," she added.
