GE14: SUPP President, State DAP Chairman in straight fight in Stampin
KUCHING, April 28 (Bernama) -- The Stampin parliamentary seat will see a straight fight in the 14th General Election (GE14) between BN candidate Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president and state DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen.
The official announcement of the nomination for the constituency was made by Election Commission returning officer Elizabeth Loh in the Padawan Municipal Council Hall, Kota Padawan, near here at 11.14 am.
DAP candidate, Chong arrived at 8.55 am and handed over his nomination form at 9.02 am.
Meanwhile BN-SUPP candidate, Dr Sim who arrived at the nomination centre at 8.50 am submitted his nomination form at 9.05 am.
Dr Sim's nomination was proposed by Lo Khere Chiang and seconded by Wilfred Yap Yau Sin while the nomination for Chong was proposed by Hiu Kuan Fah and seconded by Tan Kay Chee.
For the record, the three state constituencies under the Stampin parliamentary seats are Kota Sentosa, Batu Kitang and Batu Kawah. Sarawak held its state election in 2016.
The clash between Dr Sim, a cardiologist and Chong, a lawyer is expected to be interesting as both are assemblymen under the Stampin seat, which has 66,240 registered voters.
Dr Sim is the Batu Kawah assemblyman while Chong is Kota Sentosa assemblyman.
The Batu Kitang state seat is represented by Lo Khere Chiang of BN-SUPP.
In the GE13, the Stampin constituency was won by DAP through Julian Tan Kok Ping, but he did not defend his seat to give way to Chong who has moved from the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat.
