Zulhasnan to lock horns with PAS, PKR in Setiawangsa
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- BN's renominated Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique will face two other candidates for the Setiawangsa parliamentary seat in the 14th general election on May 9.
His challengers are PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, 36, who had moved from the Seri Setia, Selangor state seat after two terms and was also the Selangor State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker, and PAS Youth chief Ubaid Abd Akla, 31.
The three-cornered fight for the seat which has 72,136 voters, was announced by returning officer Mohd Sori Husain at Titiwangsa Stadium here.
Zulhasnan, 63, a former cabinet minister and former Malaysian ambassador to United States told reporters when met that BN had listed out four thrusts - security, health, infrastructure and social development in its manifesto for Setiawangsa, to be launched on April 30 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.
Having represented Wangsa Maju in 1999 and when it was divided to form the Setiwangsa parliamentary constituency, BN had always seen to its infrastructure development and turned it into what it is today, a rapidly developing area, said Zulhasnan, who won Setiawangsa in GE11 and GE12.
Zulhasnan who was not nominated for GE13 pledged to work hard to increase the vote majority obtained by BN in the constituency in which 29 per cent are Chinese voters.
Expressing his appreciation to UMNO Setiawangsa vice chief Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari for his support, Zulhasnan said the former MP's familiarity with the area was useful and needed by BN.
He has a role to play. We want him to play his role because we need his experience in the last five years about knowledge, strategy.. so that we can improve our performance in GE14, he said.
In GE13, Ahmad Fauzi Zahari defeated Ibrahim Yaacob of PKR with a majority of 1,390 votes.
