Three-cornered fight among former teachers for Pelangai state seat





BENTONG, April 28 (Bernama) -- The contest for the Pelangai state seat will witness a three-cornered fight among three former teachers, including Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, who is the incumbent.

Adnan, 68, who has been the assemblyman there since 1985, was a teacher at Sekolah Menengah Agama Pelangai and left the teaching service in 1985 to become a full-time politician.

Returning Officer Datuk Azhar Arshad announced the names of the two other contestants for the Pelangai state seat as Zaharim Osman, 61, of PAS and Pakatan Harapan's candidate from Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), Norhaizan Abu Hassan, 59, who is a retired teacher from Kampung Bukit Gajah, Simpang Pelangai here.

Zahari, who is a distant relative of Adnan, was a former teacher at Sekolah Menengah Chemomoi here. He has 12 children from two wives.

The announcement was made at the nomination centre at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Silver Jubilee Hall after nomination closed.

In the last general election, Adnan defeated Abdul Hamid Bahatim, of PAS, with a majority of 2,475 votes.

Pelangai is one of the four state seats in the Bentong parliamentary constituency. The other state seats are Bilut, Ketari and Sabai.

In Sabai, it will witness a four-cornered fight for the state seat among incumbent Kamache Doray Rajoo (DAP), Pahang MIC chairman Datuk R. Goonasegaran (BN), Mohd Khairuddin Abdullah (PAS) and Independent candidate T. Karunaneethi.

For the Ketari state seat, the contenders are Young Syefura Othman (PKR-DAP), Roslan Md Esa (PAS) and Datuk Lau Hoi Keong (BN) and in Bilut, incumbent Lee Chin Chen of DAP will face Poo Moon Hong (BN-MCA) and Mohd Zamri Nong (PAS).
