GE14: Three-cornered fight awaits Reezal Merican in Kepala Batas





KEPALA BATAS, April 28 (Bernama) -- Penang UMNO Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican faces a three-cornered fight in the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Reezal Merican, the incumbent in the parliamentary seat since the last general election, will be challenged by state PAS Dewan Muslimat deputy chief, Siti Mastura Mohamad and PKR-Amanah candidate Dr Zaidi Zakaria, a consultant paediatrician.

Nomination opened at 9am and returning officer Hakmal Effendi Ishak announced the candidates at 12.56pm.

Also announced were three state seats under the parliamentary constituency, namely, Penaga, that will witness a straight fight between incumbent Datuk Mohd Zain Ahmad (BN-UMNO) and Mohd Yusni Mat Piah (PAS) after the nomination of Yaakop Osman from PPBM was rejected.

The Bertam state seat will witness a three-cornered fight between incumbent Shariful Azhar Othman (BN-UMNO), Moktar Ramly (PAS) and Khaliq Mehtab Mohd Ishaq (PKR-PPBM).

The Pinang Tunggal state seat will also see three candidates fight it out, namely, incumbent Datuk Roslan Saidin (BN-UMNO), Bukhori Ghazali (PAS) and Datuk Ahmad Zaki Yuddin Abd Rahman (PKR).

Earlier, Reezal Merican, who was foreign deputy minister in the 13th Parliament, arrived at the nomination centre in the Industrial Training Institute here, accompanied by about 1,500 supporters, including former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who held the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat for eight terms from 1978 to 2008.
