GE14: Mahathir in three-cornered contest for Langkawi
LANGKAWI, April 28 (Bernama) -- PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is contesting the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the 14th general election, and will face Dr Nawawi Ahmad of the BN and Zubir Ahmad of PAS.
Nawawi, who was the MP in the last parliament, was the last to submit his nomination papers to Returning Officer Muhamad Arof Darus, at 9.19 am. He was preceded by Zubir, at 9.05 am, and Dr Mahathir, at 9.12 am.
The Langkawi constituency has 42,697 electors, comprising among others 38,689 Malays, 2,777 Chinese and 1,049 Indians.
Nawawi won the seat in the last general election with a majority of 11,861 votes, beating Ahmad Abdullah of PKR and independent Marina Hussein.
Langkawi has two state seats within it, Ayer Hangat and Kuah. In Ayer Hangat, Datuk Mohd Rawi Abdul Hamid of BN is seeking re-election and will face Azlina Azinan of PAS and Juhari Bulat of PKR. In Kuah, Nor Saidi Nanyan of BN is defending the seat against Mohd Firdaus Ahmad of PKR, Mazlan Ahmad of PAS and independent Mohamad Ratu Mansor.
Nawawi said to reporters later that the three-cornered contest for the Langkawi seat would favour the BN.
He said that at every election, the main rivals were the BN and PAS but this time around PAS was going it alone instead of being in the opposition pact and this would make it weaker.
Asked about the participation of Dr Mahathir in the contest for the seat, Nawawi said: "BN does not fear someone who has no more power."
