Johari Baharum expects stiff fight from PAS in Kubang Pasu
KUBANG PASU, April 28 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Kubang Pasu parliamentary seat Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Baharum is confident of defending the seat in the 14th general election.
He said this was based on the response from constituents who remained loyal to BN and its struggle.
Mohd Johari, who will be in a three-cornered fight for the seat, said the BN election machinery would continue to work hard to ensure victory for the party.
"Prior to this, PKR relied on PAS' strength, but now that have split. BN and PAS are clear with their respective party struggle, they don't change."
"BN has always served the people. The people are able to evaluate between an elected representative who work for the people and who doesn't. If there's a stiff fight, it will possibly be from PAS," he said when met after the announcement on the nomination for the Kubang Pasu parliamentary seat and its state seats at Dewan Tunku Anum, Kubang Pasu District Office, Jitra here today.
Mohd Johari, 64, will be challenged by atuk Amiruddin Hamzah (PKR-PPBM) and Norhafiza Fadzil (PAS).
In the last general election, Mohd Johari defeated PAS' Mohd Jamal Nasir for the seat with a majority of 10,444 votes. He garnered 33,3334 votes.
On former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir's nomination for the Jitra state seat, from Ayer Hitam, Mohd Johari, who is Deputy Defence Minister, said it showed that the people in Ayer Hitam did not support him (Mukhriz).
"Mukhriz is not like most BN leaders, who started from the bottom. He come to Kubang Pasu not to work, but for post on the belief that he can get the people's support, because before it was his father's," he said.
It will be a three-cornered fight for the Jitra state seat, involving Mukhriz (PKR-PPBM), incumbent Datuk Aminuddin Omar (BN) and Zulhazmi Osman (PAS).
Another state seat in the Kubang Pasu parliamentary constituency is Bukit Kayu Hitam, which will witness a three cornered fight among incumbent Datuk Ahmad Zaini Japar (BN), Halimahton Saadiah Saad (PKR-PPBM) and Habshah Bakar (PAS).
