PUTRAJAYA, April 28 (Bernama) -- A total of 1,984 nomination papers for Parliamentary and State Legislative Assembly seats, excluding from Sabah, had been received throughout the nomination period this morning, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

He said the data announced at the media conference at 2.45 pm today did not involve Sabah because the EC headquarters was still waiting for detailed information from the Land Below the Wind.

"A total of 590 nomination papers were received for Parliamentary seats while another 1,394 were for State Assembly seats. During the whole of the nomination period, 11 papers were rejected for various reasons, namely three Parliamentary and eight State Assembly seats," he said at the EC Tower today.

The nomination period at the 222 nomination centres throughout the country was from 9 am to 10 am.

Mohd Hashim said Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan was declared as the uncontested winner for the Rantau State Assembly seat today after the PKR candidate S. Streram could not submit his nomination papers as he did not bring his nomination pass as required by EC.

Only one individual, K. Kanafatty who submitted his candidacy papers as an independent candidate for the Skudai State seat had withdrawn during the nomination period, he said.

Mohd Hashim said so far, there were straight fights in 29 Parliamentary constituencies, three-cornered fights in 143 constituencies, four-cornered fights in 22 constituencies and five-cornered fights in three constituencies.

As for the State Legislative Seats, there were straight fights in 38 constituencies, three-cornered (331), four-cornered (54), five-cornered (18) and six-cornered (three), he said.

There are contests in 222 Parliamentary constituencies and 505 State constituencies in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Mohd Hashim said out of the 590 candidates for Parliamentary seats, 197 were from BN, 185 (PKR), 150 (PAS), 20 (Independent); nine (DAP); six (Parti Rakyat Malaysia-PRM); five (Parti Bersama Malaysia-MU); four from Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and three (Sarawak State Reform Party ? STAR).

Penang Front Party (PFP) and Peace Party Sarawak were contesting two Parliamentary seats each while Barisan Jemaah Islamiah SeMalaysia (Berjasa); Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM); Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBBSD); Parti Alternatif Rakyat (PAP), Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (HR), were contesting one seat each.

"A total of 445 candidates for the State Assembly seats are from BN, 440 (PKR), 375 (PAS), 46 (Independent), 33 (PRM), 20 ( MU), 12 (PSM), 11 (PFP), nine (PAP), two (Berjasa) and one (PCM)," he said referring to the overall total of 1,394 candidates for the State Legislative Assembly seats.

Mohd Hashim said of the total candidates contesting for Parliamentary seats, 530 were male and 60 female candidates while for the State Legislative Assembly seats there were 1,244 male and 150 female candidates.

He said the oldest candidate this time was 92 years old for the Parliamentary seat while for the State Assembly seats the oldest was 78 years old and the youngest for the State Assembly seat was 23 years old and Parliamentary seat was 22 years old.

He said the result for the GE14 was expected to be announced at the earliest by 9 pm on polling day on May 9.

Parliament was dissolved on April 7 to make way for GE14.

As a result, the Election Commission (EC) fixed today as nomination day while early voting is on May 5 and polling day on May 9.

According to the electoral roll for the fourth quarter of 2017 which was gazetted on April 10, the total number of voters was 14,940, 624, with men totalling 7,383,437 (49.42 per cent) and women totalling 7,557,187 (50.58 per cent).

On the nomination process which went smoothly, the EC Chairman explained that the period for gathering information on the nomination at the Returning Officers' level must take into consideration several processes including determining the position of the candidates in the ballot papers.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hashim hoped the official campaigning period of 11 days beginning shortly after the conclusion of nomination of candidates today and ending at 11.59 pm on May 8 would go smoothly and would not jeopardise public peace and national security.
