TEMERLOH, April 28 (Bernama) -- It will be a tough competition for BN candidate Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin who will face PAS, Amanah and two independent candidates in a five-cornered fight for the Temerloh parliamentary seat but the UMNO Supreme Council member is undeterred.

Mohd Sharkar who is taking the challenge in his stride said he was confident that voters in the area were aware that only BN could safeguard their welfare.

"The people here know me well, in fact I have been serving this parliamentary constituency as the previous incumbent will only make seasonal appearance here.

"When they are hit by floods and thunderstorms, only the BN will be around to offer assistance. So I hope the voters will consider our track record in the last four years," he told Bernama when met today.

In the 14th general election on May 9, Mohd Sharkar will face Md Jusoh Darus (PAS), Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir (Amanah), and independent candidates, former TV3 broadcast journalist Mohd Khaidir Ahmad and Muhamad Fakhrudin Abu Hanipah.

However, lecturer Isma Nazom Abdul Hamid, 52, and former Temerloh district officer Datuk Abu Jamal Nordin, 62, who had earlier announced their candidacy on an independent ticket to contest for the Temerloh parliamentary seat, were no where to be seen until the the deadline for the receipt of the nomination papers at 10am.

Apart from the Temerloh parliamentary seat, Mohd Sharkar will also be defending the Lanchang state seat which he won in GE13 after defeating PKR candidate Ahmad Nizam Hamid with 1,127 majority votes.

In the contest for the Lanchang state seat, Mohd Sharkar will face Hasan Omar (PAS), Abas Awang (PKR) and Mohd Khaidir Ahmad (Independent).
