Candidates with legal background to contest in Masjid Tanah

ALOR GAJAH, April 28 (Bernama) -- It will be a three-corner fight for the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in the 14th general election (GE14), with two of the candidates being legal practitioners.

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who is a lawyer, will face former High Court judge Datuk Dr Sabirin Ja'afar of PKR and former lecturer Mohd Nasir Othman of PAS.

Their nominations were confirmed and announced by Returning Officer Ahmad Azlan Ahmad Saleh at the nomination centre at the Rakan Muda Complex here today.

Speaking to reporters later, Mas Ermieyati, who is Puteri UMNO chief, said she hoped that all candidates would carry out their campaign with prudence.

"We don't want to tarnish the democracy process. What's important is that BN has a good track record. We hope that all voters in Masjid Tanah will consider our track record from the last term," she said.

Meanwhile, Sabirin said although he and Mas Ermieyati were related, he was ready to put up a good fight and hoped that he would be able to garner votes.

In the 13th general election, incumbent Mas Ermieyati who is also Tourism and Culture Deputy Minister won with a majority of 16,200 votes over PAS candidate Mohd Nasaie Ismail.

She was the first woman of the Melaka BN to contest the parliamentary seat in the state in the last general election.

Earlier, Mas Ermieyati, clad in a blue baju kurung marched from Kampung Durian Daun Barat to the nomination centre, which is located 300-metre away, accompanied by more than 500 BN supporters before submitting her nomination papers at 8.45 am.

She arrived at the nomination centre simultaneously with five BN candidates for state seats under the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency namely Datuk Ismail Othman for Kuala Linggi, Datuk Md Rawi Mahmud (Tanjung Bidara), Datuk Amirudin Yusop (Ayer Limau), Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali (Lendu) and Datuk Latipah Omar (Taboh Naning).
