BUKIT MERTAJAM, April 28 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional's candidate for Permatang Pauh Datuk Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said said he is optimistic of creating history in the PKR stronghold come polling day on May 9.

Mohd Zaidi is in a three-cornered fight for the seat with PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar and Penang PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden being the other candidates.

"Based on the feedback we have received, support for BN now is much higher than for PKR and PAS. Just look at the crowd of BN supporters during nomination today," he told reporters after the nomination process.

The seat has been in hands of Nurul Izzah's family for ages.

Her father is former deputy prime minister and former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for sodomy, while her mother is PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Wan Azizah is the incumbent for Permatang Pauh but has moved to the Pandan parliamentary seat in Selangor for this election.
