Three-hour delay at nomination centre due to independent candidate's antics

GEORGE TOWN, April 28 (Bernama) -- The announcement of candidates for Bayan Baru parliamentary seat and three state seats, Batu Uban, Pantai Jerejak and Batu Maung at SJK (C) Min Sin here today was delayed for more than two hours due to an unexpected turn.

This is after social activist A.Rajendra, who arrived at 9.05 am wishing to independently contest the Bayan Baru parliamentary seat and Batu Uban state seat, could not provide the documents required by the Returning Officer Mohd Jamil Mohamed.

Mohd Jamil stated that since Rajendra had contested the Batu Uban seat in the last general election, he was required to submit a financial statement but somehow failed to do so.

Rajendra, 50, who donned the traditional Tamilian attire for the nomination, left the centre even before he was disqualified.

In the last general election, Rajendra only managed to secure 28 votes, hence losing his deposit.

There is a four-cornered fight for the Bayan Baru parliamentary seat, that is between Yim Boon Leong (MU), Sim Tze Tzin (PKR), Chuah Seng Guan (BN-MCA), and Iszuree Ibrahim (PAS).

As for Pantai Jerejak, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is in a four-cornered fight with Yim Boon Leong (MU), Mohd Farhan Yusri (PAS) and Oh Tong Keong (BN-Gerakan).

The Batu Uban seat is contested by Hng Cher Wey (BN-Gerakan), Datuk M. Vikneswaran (PAS-DHPP), A Kumaresan (PKR), Teoh Kean Liang (PFP), and Teoh Kok Siang (MU), while in Batu Maung, there is a three-cornered fight between Abdul Halim Hussain (PKR), Saiful Lizan Yusoff (PAS) and Liakat Ali Mohamed Ali (BN-UMNO).
