Opposition must explain proposed free education, not mere manifesto - Shabery

KEMAMAN, April 29 (Bernama) -- The opposition must give more detailed explanations from the economic point of view if they really want to provide free education and abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST), says Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said there had been no substantial explanations on the matters made by the opposition so far as what they offered was only a manifesto to gain people's attention and support.

"Actually, the opposition parties have been inconsistent when talking about education in our country. They only want to be a populist by declaring that they would give free education from primary to tertiary level.

"Our national education is already free, even at tertiary level. What is being charged is only a small portion of the actual cost, which is why the fees in our public universities are among the lowest," he told reporters at the Teachers' Day celebration held at Sekolah Menengah Imtiaz Kemaman here today.

Also present were Kemaman UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, and three Barisan Nasional candidates for the state seats in Kemaman, namely Rosli Othman, Datuk Mohamed Awang Tera, and Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar.
