Penang Pakatan Harapan manifesto fails to highlight hillslope development - Teng

GEORGE TOWN, April 30 (Bernama) -- Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow has claimed the Pakatan Harapan state manifesto on Green State does not touch on hillslope development.
The BN candidate for the Tanjong Bunga state seat, said lives would be endangered because of unrestricted development, especially when the drainage system was unable to cope with increasing capacity of overflowing water.
"We must put a stop on development on hill side, hilly terrain and high risk area. We must protect our environment and ensure the safety of the people," Teng, who is also Penang Gerakan chairman, told reporters here today.
Yesterday in a forum, Tanjong Bunga residents claimed that the DAP-led state government had approved a multi-storey mixed development on the class four hill in Tanjong Bunga, which exceeds 250 feet above sea-level and 35-degree slope on the 12.26 acres.
Teng said not only had it been approved on an environmentally sensitive area, it also contradicted the 2007 Penang Structure Plan that clearly forbade any development above a 25-degree gradient and 250 feet above sea-level.
He urged the Penang Island City Council to stop processing the building plan for the project and called on the Department of Environment (DOE) headquarters to intervene on the case as the Environmental Impact Assessment was approved by the state DOE.
Teng faces a four-cornered contest for the Tanjong Bunga state seat against DAP candidate Zairil Khir Johari, Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidate Chua Cheong Wee and Parti Bersama Malaysia's (PBM) Lee Zheng Yong in the 14th General Election on May 9.
