Penang MCA confident of positive result in GE14

GEORGE TOWN, April 30 (Bernama) -- The Penang MCA is confident of achieving a better outcome in the 14th General Election (GE14) based on the response and support shown by voters during the campaigning period so far.

Its chairman, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng said the party had fielded 10 new candidates this time around, with four of them aged below 40.

According to him, MCA candidates have been going from door-to-door, besides meeting with voters at public markets and hawker centres to better explain the federal government's policies.

"Our campaign has received a fairly good response compared to 10 years ago, and I am confident we will be able to win the state seats in GE14," he told reporters here today.

MCA will be contesting in 10 state seats and four parliamentary seats in Penang.

Tan, 57, a candidate for the Machang Bubuk state seat said MCA had not won any seat in the state for two straight terms, and this had affected the people's voices from being heard in the state assembly.

"We have had no representation in the state assembly for the past two terms, and this is not healthy because there is no opposition to monitor the policies of the state government," he said.

He urged Penang voters to give Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates, especially those from MCA, a chance so that there could be healthy opposition in the state assembly.

He said MCA would also be holding three major talks at Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam and George Town to explain the true position of the state under the DAP-led government.

Apart from Machang Bubuk, MCA will also be contesting in the state seats of Sungai Puyu, Bagan Jermal, Berapit, Padang Lalang, Air Putih, Pengkalan Kota, Komtar, Seri Delima and Paya Terubong.

The party will also be contesting in four parliamentary seats, namely Bagan, Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Gelugor and Bayan Baru.
