GEORGE TOWN, May 1 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) will fulfil its pledge of building 65,000 affordable houses in Penang within the next five years if given the mandate after the 14th General Election on May 9.

Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow said it was BN's plan to ensure that sufficient low-cost and low-medium cost houses were built for the people in Penang within the next five years, and to ensure the houses were affordable to the working class.

"We strongly believe we can fulfil these pledges, within our capability and resources. However, we need the support and mandate of the people," he said in a statement here today.

He said BN could implement the plan with the support of the people, many of whom desired to have their own home.

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the construction of 65,000 affordable homes in the state when launching BN's GE14 Manifesto at Bukit Jalil Axiata Arena.

Teng who is also BN's candidate for the Tanjong Bunga state seat, said there was no development of low cost houses and People's Housing Project (PPR) by the DAP-led state government during its 10 years' tenure.

Meanwhile, he said housing developers would be required to build 30 per cent quota of low-cost, low-medium cost and PPR houses at the same location, as a whole project.

"The people have also been complaining of high prices for houses. Our initiative will also include setting up interest-free fund for buyers who are eligible for low-cost, low-medium cost and PPR houses," he said.

The Penang Gerakan chairman also said BN planned to introduce the Rent-to-Own Housing scheme, besides setting a price of RM40,000 including a free carpark for a low-cost unit.

He said for a medium-cost unit, there is a range of RM80,000 to RM120,00 including a free carpark.

"We will also provide a public housing rental scheme to help the tenants under the poor and disabled category as well as special quota for single women and single mothers to own low-cost or affordable house," he said.

In GE14, Teng will face DAP's Zairil Khir Johari, Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidate Chua Cheong Wee and Malaysian United Party (MU)'s Lee Zheng Yong.
