GE14 campaign activities running smoothly, under control - EC
KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) -- The 14th general election (GE14) campaigning which is into its fifth day, is reported to be running smoothly and fully under control.
According to Election Commission (EC) legal advisor Azizan Md Arshad so far the commission has not received any report of serious incident or chaos.
"So far, all parties have complied with the rules and regulations set by the EC. If this scenario is maintained, GE14 could be regarded as the cleanest and and most peaceful GE ever held," he said when met after appearing as guest on Bernama Today talk show at Wisma Bernama here today.
The campaign period for GE14 which began after nomination on April 28 will last until 11.59pm on May 8. Polling date has been set on May 9, while early voting will be held on May 5.
On reports that pictures of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also PKR candidate for Langkawi parliamentary seat, were taken down at certain locations, Azizan clarified that only pictures of party's president, deputy president, menteri besar or chief minister, candidates, party liaison chairman or its equivalent were allowed to be used on campaign materials.
He added that the campaign activities were being monitored by Election Enforcement teams, the Royal Malaysian Police and EC-appointed parties stationed in every constituency.
"When the EC receives complaints, the teams will have a discussion to find the best possible solution before approaching the relevant parties. Usually the unauthorised campaign materials will be taken down by party members, after being informed (on violation of the rule)," he added.
When asked about PKR Rantau state seat candidate Dr S Streram who was barred from entering the nomination centre for not having a candidate pass resulting in Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan winning the seat unopposed, Azizan called on all parties to wait until the police investigation was over.
On the suit filed by PKR vice-president Tian Chua to challenge the decision made by Batu parliamentary returning officer in rejecting his nomination to contest as a GE14 candidate, Azizan said the case would be heard in the High Court tomorrow.
On nomination day last Saturday, Tian Chua failed to stand as candidate to defend the P115 Batu parliamentary seat when the EC rejected his nomination on the basis he had been fined RM2,000 for insulting the modesty of a police officer.
