BN govt programmes greatly benefit farming sector - Azlan Man
KANGAR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Fishermen, farmers, breeders and cultivators are the groups that have benefitted from various government programmes to make the agricultural sector a profitable source of income.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man said the allocation of RM2.3 billion given by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government for the agricultural sector in this year's budget also proved the importance of the sector to the country's economy.
"This means the government wants to transform the agricultural sector into a profitable industry, not merely for subsistence," he told Bernama here today after presenting the phase one special assistance of RM600 each to 2,124 farmers outside the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) areas in Perlis, totalling RM1.274 million.
On April 21, Azlan presented the same financial assistance to 5,571 farmers who were members of 11 Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK) in MADA Region 1 amounting to RM3.342 million.
According to the menteri besar, the government through MADA had also implemented many other programmes involving the four groups.
"The plan is to lift them out of poverty," he said.
