KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) -- UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has urged Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad not to indulge politics by spouting lies and seeking to confuse the people and Putrajaya residents in the 14th General Election (GE14).
He also said that if Dr Mahathir was convinced of his current struggle, the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman should conduct his politickings based on the truth and not utter slander after slander against others.
While denying all the allegations thrown by Dr Mahathir at the Pakatan Harapan Rise of the People ceramah in Putrajaya yesterday, Tengku Adnan asserted that the people of Putrajaya had been part of his family all these while.
"If Tun is confident of winning, what is the need for Tun to write an open letter to the people especially UMNO members appealing to them to support Tun, whilst, prior to this, it was Tun himself who betrayed UMNO's struggle and even making numerous accusation against UMNO members.
"Would it not be better if Tun wrote an open letter to Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members to apologise for Tun's previous decisions which triggered a reform movement supported by PKR?" he said in a statement here today.
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan, who is the Barisan Nasional (BN) Putrajaya parliamentary candidate, was confident that the people, including the voters in Putrajaya, would wisely make their evaluations on the polling day.
Dr Mahathir has used his name (Tengku Adnan) as a propaganda material but, it only exposed the shame of the Langkawi parliamentary candidate (Mahathir) himself.
"Enough already, do not easily forget, don't use the people, do not ruin the race, do not destroy the nation, Tun's time has passed. Tun's era of administration, leadership and struggle are no longer relevant," he said.
Tengku Adnan said he was also aware that the number of supporters present in the talk yesterday were not local residents, and that attendance was planned as closely as possible to pull wool over the eyes of the public.
"I was aware about the programme earlier on, and I have asked the people of Putrajaya, especially the young people not to disturb or create any disruptions at Tun's event. We know that many outsiders are flooding Tun's talk but do not slander," he said.
Tengku Adnan also rebuked Mahathir who accused him of being a thief, and wanted to know what he had stolen when he had actually used his wealth to help the people.
"I am not a thief. In fact with the property that I have, I am grateful to be able to help the people and the residents of Putrajaya. Even though my property is decreasing every year, I am happy to help the people with the money I have.
"Tun, see for yourself the development and progress here (Putrajaya), that's my responsibility as a representative of the people." Venturing into politics does not add to my property as Tun claimed but, on the other hand, it is decreasing," he said.
Tengku Adnan also asked which contract he took as claimed by Dr Mahathir whilst he himself had been declared as among the richest people in Malaysia in 1992 when he was prime minister.
"Did Tun forget that, I gave my energy to defend him when Tun was encountering difficulties from the reformists' attack? Has Tun forgotten my good deeds at that time?" Tengku Adnan asked.
